Shops, Restaurants and Attractions

These are all personal recommendations; we hope you'll enjoy visiting some of them during your stay.

Bars and Restaurants

Picture
The Bow Bar

Directly underneath the apartment, the Bow Bar is a legendary pub popular with locals and visitors alike. One of the few pubs still to use old-style 1920s founts, its huge range of malts is displayed on a beautiful mahogany gantry. Tasty pies at lunchtimes.

No music, no hen or stag parties!

Maison Bleue

North African influenced French cuisine in this atmospheric multi-level restaurant opposite the apartment. Be careful of the chilli in the surprise squid! Free wi-fi and charming staff.

Picture
La Barantine Boulangerie and Patisserie

A new branch of the authentically French, family-run Bruntsfield favourite. Virtually opposite the front door of the apartment, they open early for, excellent bread, fresh croissants and fine coffee, as well as a small but immaculate selection of patisserie and colourful macarons.

Picture
Oink

Excellent value hog roast baps opposite the apartment. Come in three sizes, the Piglet, the Oink, and the Grunter, are very reasonably priced, brought daily from a family farm in Berwickshire.

The Mussel and Steak Bar

Particularly good value at lunch, this is an unpretentious family-run eatery, good for children, at the bottom of the West Bow.

Vittoria On The Bridge

Up to George IV Bridge and turn right. Part of a popular and long-established family-run Edinburgh chain, the food here is quick and tasty.

Picture
Mary's Milk Bar

Truly amazing ice creams, shakes, hot chocolates and floats, recently featured in Buzzfeed... which has made the queues longer! At the South East corner of the Grassmarket.

Picture
Cafe Andaluz

Large, friendly and welcoming tapas restaurant on George Street in the New Town with a great interior. We've never been disappointed!

Shops

Picture
The Red Door Gallery

Affordable arts, crafts, jewellery, prints and cards from this long-established and quirky gallery opposite the apartment.

Picture
Demijohn

The original "liquid deli", selling whiskies, wines, liqueurs, spirits, oil and vinegar which can be tasted before they're bottled. Choose a bottle, fill it, and then bring it back for more!

Picture
Scottish Pictures

A small but delightful gallery of antique maps and prints among the bookshops of the West Port, run by the charming Ian Smith, who supplied the replica map above the fireplace.

Museum Context

West Bow Sister shop to Old Town Context on Cockburn Street and Context Interiors, this unusual vintage gift and interiors shop is on the old Robert Cresser Brush shop premises, and still retains some of the fittings.
